Adopting Emmy from the Almost Home Humane Society in West Lafayette, Indiana was a moment of serendipity. As I walked down the rows of cages, she was the only kitten who spoke back to me, and that instantly captured my heart. At just one year old, Emmy became part of our family, bringing joy, playfulness, and an unwavering spirit despite her early health challenges.
A Playful Fighter
Emmy’s kitten-like playfulness never faded, even during her recovery from a respiratory virus she caught at the shelter. Watching her toss a toy mouse around, it was clear she was a spirited fighter. Over the course of her long 19-year life, Emmy continued to bring joy and energy into our lives. She loved playing fetch, chasing lights, and showcasing her impressive jumping skills by hanging on door frames. Even in her senior years, her playful nature remained strong.
A Loving Companion
Emmy was one of the most affectionate cats I’ve ever known. She was a natural hugger, often rubbing her face on my ear and giving me a “gentle” love bite. During the pandemic, she became my constant companion, even joining my Zoom calls, much to the delight of my students and colleagues. Our new routine included supervised outdoor visits, where Emmy explored nature and enjoyed her beloved catnip garden.
A Lifelong Journey with Medical Advancements
Emmy lived a long and healthy life thanks to medical advances made possible by animal research. Like many cats, she developed hyperthyroidism and required medication to manage it. The treatments that helped extend her life were the result of humane animal research, highlighting the critical role such research plays in veterinary medicine.
