A Hero in This Life & Beyond
Robby, a dog originally bred to be a guide dog, was released after an evaluation, but little did anyone know, he was destined for greater things. When I first brought him home at 10 weeks old, I immediately knew I had a very special boy. Robby became a registered therapy dog, bringing comfort and joy to people in nursing homes, special needs centers, and children’s libraries. His fan following grew, and he was loved by everyone who met him. Sadly, Robby passed away at 12 years old, but we decided to donate him to the Cornell Veterinary Biobank so he could continue to be a hero—this time for science. His story of love and service still lives on.
The Tongue
During my first training session with Maria’s Boxer, Conrad, I was greeted with what felt like a bizarre mix of a soft, soggy salami and an eel slapping against my arm. It was Conrad’s tongue, which had dragged over broken glass while sniffing outside. Maria, embarrassed by his unusual tongue behavior, had been unable to find a solution. The vet didn’t have any answers, so I took Conrad to the Animal Medical Center. After a groundbreaking operation that was provided free of charge, Conrad’s tongue looked normal, and Maria was beaming with pride as she walked him, forever grateful for the change.
Family Unit
I find comfort in Richie’s presence, his strong arms around me, and the smell of coconut oil in his hair. But it's the sound of Seymour’s collar jingling and the sensation of his small paws on my leg that completes our family. "Family hug!" Richie and I say as Seymour jumps up, joining our embrace. Our little family, consisting of two humans and one dog, is whole. As my friend Annie wisely put it: “Two people are just a couple, but two people and a dog make a family.”
The Joy of Fostering Senior Dogs
When I first fostered a 14-year-old Chihuahua named Daydream from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, I never imagined the depth of love and resilience I would encounter. Since then, I’ve fostered nearly 60 senior dogs, and each has shown me that love and life are truly about the present moment. No matter their past, these dogs just want to be loved. Adopting a senior dog has taught me what true, unconditional love is, and it’s a journey that I’ll cherish forever.
Indominable Spirit, Unwavering Love
A puppy, broken and bleeding from abuse, hobbled down a street—three broken legs, a shattered jaw, and burns covering half his body. Despite his horrifying past, he trusted those who rescued him and kissed the doctors who helped him heal. I knew I had to step in and become his mom, to nurture him and help him grow. Six years later, my Barney still limps and his fur hasn’t fully grown back, but his love for me remains unwavering. The bond we share is unbreakable, and I cherish him every single day.
No Way Out
Lily was a handful from the start—endless diarrhea, biting, chewing, and, worst of all, a look in her eyes that seemed to say she was recharging her energy with an almost inexhaustible German Shepherd battery. At the time, we never thought we could handle her. Yet, we grew through it. Lily taught us patience, perseverance, and the true meaning of unconditional love. Now, at five years old, she is the sweetest, funniest, most affectionate dog we could ever ask for, and her once piercing eyes have softened into adoring gazes.
