A rescue dog named Sarah is celebrating her first Christmas in a loving home after spending over 1,000 days in kennels. Joanne Baker from Nottinghamshire, England, stepped in to adopt the three-year-old lurcher after learning about her story through a BBC feature shared by the RSPCA in Cambridgeshire.
Baker was moved by Sarah’s situation and felt compelled to act. “After reading her story on the BBC News website, I couldn’t stand to think a young dog could potentially spend the rest of her life in kennels,” she said.
Sarah is now settling into her new life at Baker’s farmhouse in a small village. With plenty of space to play alongside the family’s other lurcher, Charlie, Sarah is thriving. Baker noted that Sarah’s energetic zoomies in the garden might not be ideal for the lawn, but seeing her happy makes it worthwhile.
Before finding her forever home, Sarah had endured three Christmases without a family. Described by the RSPCA as a sweet but initially shy dog, Sarah eventually reveals a playful and affectionate personality. Tiffany Saunders, an RSPCA supervisor, explained that Sarah’s early life was difficult. “[Her] life had been awful as she was shut in a kennel all the time and didn’t know how to walk on a lead and had to be carried out of the venue she was rescued from,” Saunders shared.
Due to the circumstances surrounding her rescue, Sarah wasn’t eligible for adoption until December 2022. The RSPCA sought experienced owners who could help Sarah adjust to home life. Twice, she was close to being rehomed, but the adoptions didn’t go through. That changed when Baker welcomed her into the family.
